Sangramsinh Parmar, Associate Professor and Lead, Space Design, is an experienced architect and urban planner with a keen research interest in promoting innovative and exploratory methods and exercises in design pedagogy. While exploring new methods for teaching design, he still believes in the old-school rigours of community immersion, accurate drawing and expressive hand sketches. Apart from sustainability and tech integration, his current research involves studies and documentation on ethno-spatial understanding of vernacular built environments in India. This research examines how the social-cultural aspects of traditional communities influence the development of built environments.
At Anant, Sangram promotes innovative and exploratory methods and exercises in design pedagogy. With the support of other instructors at the School of Design, he has successfully demonstrated this through multiple collaborative studios across various design disciplines and at the Space Design programme.
After completing his BArch from CEPT University, he worked for several years before pursuing MArch in Urban Planning. He is also a LEED (USGBC) and IGBC (India Green Building Council) Accredited professional. His design practice focuses on sustainability and accessibility of design across all strata of the economy and society.
A practising architect and interior designer for more than 20 years, Sangramsinh has also been involved in academics and research for almost a decade. He has developed innovative lateral technological adaptations that integrate the built environment’s lifecycle with digital tools, operational data and IoT applications.
He has authored and published several research papers in sustainability, biophilia and integrated design approach and has been invited to speak on Green Buildings and Sustainability by various institutes and organisations. He is also actively involved in the local chapter of IGBC and contributes to promoting sustainability amongst school children. He has been on the jury of prominent institutes like NID, CEPT, APIED and Nirma University.
Sangramsinh has been associated with Anant right from the beginning. He was a visiting faculty at Anant Institute of Architecture from 2011 to 2015.
Beyond academia, Sangramsinh is an avid traveller, hitting the road at the slightest opportunity. Treks in the Himalayas are his constant calling and he has been awarded the ‘Spirit of Trekking’ award by a leading trek organiser – Indiahikes. Reading, playing football and planning for his future farming ventures take up most of his spare time. However, what he enjoys most is the company of his young design students on campus.
