Sreejit Datta, an Assistant Professor at the School of Creative Practices and Entrepreneurship and Foundation Studies at Anant, focuses on Philosophical Aesthetics and Historiography as his research interests. He draws upon methodological tools like hermeneutics, phenomenology, close reading and comparativist approaches from Philosophy, Literary Studies, Historiography and Religious Studies for his teaching and research work. Sreejit is also profoundly interested in Anthropology, Cultural Studies and Performance Studies and is an expert in Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS).

 

At Anant, Sreejit’s teaching focuses on the intersections of philosophical aesthetics and historiography, speaking to the themes of design and art criticism, aesthetic philosophy, history of design and art and research methodology. He draws upon research and educational approaches from humanistic studies, aiming to create immersive and engaging experiences for learners.

 

Sreejit has done his doctoral research in the field of Philosophical Aesthetics at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kollam, Kerala, has a Masters in Comparative Literature from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and a BSc in Statistics (Hons) from St Xavier’s College, Calcutta, under the University of Calcutta. He was awarded a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) upon clearing the National Eligibility Test (NET) and qualified for an Assistant Professorship.

 

In 2022, he was awarded a book writing fellowship by the Motwani Jadeja Foundation, Palo Alto, CA, USA, for writing a book on Modern Indian History.

 

Before joining Anant, Sreejit worked at the United Institute of Design, Gandhinagar, teaching Art and Design History, Semiotics, Art and Design Criticism and Aesthetics. Earlier, he was an Assistant Professor and Director of the Centre for Civilisational Studies at Rishihood University in Sonipat, Haryana. He also worked as an Assistant Professor at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Mysuru and the American Institute of Indian Studies, Kolkata.

 

An accomplished vocalist specialising in Rabindrasangeet and Hindustani classical music, Sreejit also writes poetry and drama in English and Bangla. He has performed as a stage artist in numerous solo and group concerts across India and abroad. He was awarded the ‘Young Artistes Scholarship’ to undertake advanced Hindustani Light Classical Music training by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, 2011.
