Maharishi Thula

A practising architect, Maharishi Thula has been an Assistant Professor at Anant School of Architecture since 2015, teaching subjects like Light and Space, Building Construction Techniques, Advanced Construction and Services, Technical Drawings, Vernacular Architecture, Institutional Studio and Urbanism. Maharishi’s research interests lie in Precast Concrete, Sustainable Housing, Recycled Building Materials and Methods, Natural Architecture and Bamboo. His research project, ‘Evaluation of Precast Hollow-core Concrete – A Sustainable Building Product,’ was published in the journal LAMBERT – Academic Publishing.


He has also been working on research projects based on pedagogical strategies for architecture against artificial intelligence, the spiritual significance of water as an important source of life – exploring traditional harvesting systems of Uttarakhand, architectural initiative – low-cost school building, tectonic interpretations – an insight into the technical dimensions of architecture and architecture and society – approach towards a sustainable neighbourhood through methodologically establishing common relations between two different creative fields – Architecture and Music.


A postgraduate in Architecture in Sustainable Architecture from CEPT University and an undergraduate in Architecture from SVIT, Vasad, Maharishi has been actively involved in teaching and serves as a visiting faculty at SVIT and SAL Institute of Architecture, Ahmedabad. Maharishi has also been a core part of the team for Project 1:1 – Create and Build Your Own Studio at CEPT University. He has actively participated in live workshops like Hyperbolic-Parabolic Construction Techniques with Bamboo and Ferro Cement.


At Anant, Maharishi has conducted many RSPs (relative study programs) like Learning from Geoffrey Bawa’s Architecture in Sri Lanka, Fatehpur Sikri in Delhi and Karpur Baoli in Ramtek, Nagpur apart from conducting workshops on Structural Installation with Ferrocement. His approach towards teaching includes 3D informative learning outputs as a core part of practical learning through live case studies, field visits and creative model-making. He has a keen interest in various technical subjects and topics related to urban development, place-making spaces and sustainable built environments.


Currently, Maharishi runs an Ahmedabad-based architecture firm Avritah Architects. He has undertaken several notable projects including Aranya Hills Resort and Villas in Jambughoda, the restoration of Huzoor Palace in Porbandar and the redevelopment of Vitarag Housing Society and Patel Farm in Ahmedabad.


Maharishi has also interned with well-known organisations like HCP Design and Project Management and Vastu Shilpa Consultancy. He was a Project Manager with Anand Patel & Associates on noted projects such as Smritivan Earthquake Memorial Kutch, Bhuj, Alembic Township, Vadodara, Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt Ltd, Ahmedabad, Olive Grace Apartment, Ahmedabad, among many others.


Beyond academics and professional commitments, Maharishi actively volunteers at Chinmaya Mission Ahmedabad. He is an astute chess player and a passionate table player. A sports enthusiast, Maharishi regularly plays volleyball while engaging in multiple professional activities from various groups like IIID (Institute of Indian Interior Designers), IIA (The Indian Institute of Architects) and CDOS (Centre for Development of Stone).
