This capstone explores the potential of unused urban areas, particularly the area under the Jamalpur flyover in Ahmedabad. For vegetable vendors, the project’s primary stakeholders, the objective is to transform this underutilised space into a vibrant and dignified marketplace. The idea of the Urban Underbelly, which describes often overlooked but busy areas, is crucial to the design. This project aims to balance the support of formal infrastructure and the informal character of street markets. Integrating official and informal components creates a shared public area that enhances people’s quality of life while respecting their daily requirements. The proposal eventually intends to honour street vendors and acknowledge their contribution to the city by giving them a well-thought-out, functional and welcoming area beneath the flyover.
