Vijayendra Singh Sekhon

Vijay Sekhon is an Associate Professor and Lead, Interaction Design, School of Design. His research interest lies in narrative construction and creating site-responsive immersive experiences. In his work, Vijay focuses on interweaving various narratives that run parallelly and create work that is contextual yet pushes the boundaries. The materiality of the form as its meaning, the dynamic equilibrium between the two remains his key research area. 

 

At Anant, Vijay focuses on institution building and sculpting Interaction Design Department (IxD), where students not only learn how to bring design, art and technology in their fold but are prepared for the technologies that are not yet there. He focuses on interdisciplinarity and teaches across several departments. Some of the modules he undertakes include Immersive Experience Design, Research in Context, Storytelling, Documentary Filmmaking, Video Art, Visual Arts Studio and Art History. 

 

Vijay holds an MPS from Interactive Telecommunications Program, Tisch School of the Arts, New York University and has an MFA Degree with Gold Medal from the Faculty of Fine Arts, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He is currently a PhD fellow, pursuing interdisciplinary research on how Art and Indian Knowledge Systems – Yoga can help achieve sustainable futures. 

 

Throughout his career, Vijay been an interdisciplinary artist and worked for organisations in various capacities. Before joining Anant, he worked in the Brand Strategy and Communication Department as part of Chairman’s office with Reliance Industries. Before that, he worked with Oscar winning company Merchant Ivory Productions in New York. 

 

As an artist, Vijay has exhibited and performed internationally in the USA, Israel, South Korea, Switzerland, India and various other places. He has also worked closely with Emeritus Professor and artist Krishna Reddy and Zarina Hashmi in New York. Vijay’s works are in various private collections and museums including Blak Kit Performance archive, Cologne. 

 

Beyond academia, Vijay is an artist and maintains his studio practice. An avid reader, he also enjoys recording environmental sounds and build compositions. He plays badminton and has won club and university level championships. He also loves watching films and writing.
